Laser Vision Correction
If you’ve been longing to reduce - or even eliminate - your dependence on glasses and contact lenses, you’ve probably looked into refractive surgery. Today’s state-of-the-art refractive surgery procedures can correct myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism (uneven focusing of light) and, to a lesser degree, hyperopia (farsightedness). To find out if you’re a candidate for refractive surgery, look to Drs. Wayne L. Barber, Robert F. Friedman and Cynthia H. Jun at the Center for Total Eye Care.
About Refractive Surgery Refractive surgery, as its name suggests, adjusts the way your eyes refract, or bend, light by changing the shape of the cornea, which is the front surface of your eye. One of the earliest refractive surgery techniques was radial keratotomy (RK), which we introduced first to the Carroll County region. We were also the first area practice to offer laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK. Drs. Barber and Friedman use the FDA-approved VISX STAR S4 ActiveTrac Laser with WaveFront custom treatment. This laser is widely considered to be the most effective one available today. WaveFront-guided LASIK uses 3-D measurements of how your eye processes images to guide the laser in reshaping the cornea. We also use a state-of-the-art technology called iris registration, which precisely tracks eye movement, allowing for extremely precise LASIK outcomes.
LASIK
With LASIK, a few anesthetic drops are applied, and an eyelid holder is placed to prevent blinking. A thin flap of cornea is elevated, exposing the inner layers of the cornea. The laser is programmed precisely according to your eye’s individual “fingerprint” and accurately reshapes your cornea. The flap is then sealed back into place and the whole process is complete within just minutes. Over 95% of Drs. Barber and Friedman’s LASIK patients achieve between 20/20 and 20/40 vision without glasses or contacts. Of course, individual results may vary and Drs. Barber and Friedman will never give you unrealistic expectations. Finally, you’ll feel confident knowing that Dr. Friedman is fellowship-trained in corneal and refractive surgery and is a former medical director and surgeon at a nationally known refractive surgery center.
